How To Prepare For Bike Rides With Your Dog?

If your dog loves to jog, you’ve probably thought about how great it would be to take him on a bike ride. This way you can enjoy time together. But before you pack up your bike and take your pup along, read our tips on how to prepare.

So what does it take to make a bike ride with a dog successful?

  • First, a special bike leash, or bike springer. It frees your hands because it mounts to the back of the bike, usually under the seat. You’ll give your dog room to maneuver, but you’ll still be able to control him.
  • Second, you’ll need a harness. It’ll reduce the strain on your dog’s neck and he won’t be able to break free if he should decide to run off in the opposite direction. The harness should have a top ring for attachment.
  • Thirdly, don’t forget water bowl! While running actively the dog will be thirsty, so stop and give him water, especially if it’s hot and sunny.
  • Fourth, start with short distances. The dog needs to get used to the new activity, and you need to make sure you can control not only the bike, but also the pet running next to you. So be sure to start with small rides in places that you are familiar with. Over time, as the pet gets comfortable, you’ll be able to go farther and farther with it, and increase the speed of your ride.

If you are going for a ride in the evening, make sure you can see your dog in the dark. You can wear a special reflective vest or attach reflective gear to the harness and leash.

And, of course, remember about safety – do not ride on roads with active traffic, always monitor the condition of the dog and do not overload him if he is not ready for it. Not all breeds can keep their owners company on bike rides, so be rational about your pet’s fitness and endurance.
