Earthquake disaster in Turkey and Syria: Switzerland helps with experts and dogs

Last Modified: February 6, 2023 by Julia Powell Leave a Comment

Swiss Aid Reaches Earthquake-Stricken Turkey and Syria

The world has come together to provide aid to the victims of the devastating earthquakes that struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. The Swiss government has responded to the call for assistance by sending 80 specialists from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to the disaster zones. The aid unit, part of the Swiss government’s humanitarian department, is now preparing for a Swiss Rescue mission.

Along with the specialists, Swiss search dog teams from Redog, the Swiss Association for Search and Rescue Dogs, have also been deployed to the earthquake zones. The teams will work together with the Turkish rescue organization GEA and the SDC to provide search and rescue services.

The mobilization of the Swiss experts and search dog teams is underway, with departure planned for the early evening of February 6, 2023.

The Swiss government’s efforts to help the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria demonstrate their commitment to providing aid and support in times of crisis.

In a statement released by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, they said, “The Swiss government is determined to support the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria. Our specialists and search dog teams will work tirelessly to bring relief and comfort to those affected.”

As the world continues to provide aid to the earthquake-stricken regions, the Swiss government’s efforts serve as a beacon of hope for the victims and a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis.

Redog: a Pioneer in Search and Rescue

Redog, the Swiss Association for Search and Rescue Dogs, has a rich history that spans over 50 years. Founded in 1971 by a group of dog handlers with a vision to use their avalanche detection dogs to locate people under rubble, Redog quickly became a leader in the field of search and rescue with dogs. The organization was internationally recognized for its standards in training and field operations.

In 1981, Redog became one of the founding members of the Rescue Chain and three years later, joined the Swiss Red Cross as a rescue organization. Today, Redog is a well-established and respected search and rescue organization that continues to support disaster relief efforts across the world.

As Redog celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021, the organization looked back on its rich history and the significant contributions it has made to the world of search and rescue. From its humble beginnings as a small pioneer organization, Redog has grown into a leading search and rescue organization that continues to set standards and provide aid in times of crisis.
