Buyer’s Guide

Why Garmin Tracking Systems?

Garmin is a major manufacturer of navigation systems, the leader in this field. Tri Tronics is a company that has been working for over 45 years and originally invented, developed and refined the ideal dog training system using electronic collars. In the recent past Tri Tronics was acquired by Garmin, so Tri Tronics as such is a part of Garmin. Tri Tronics has always positioned itself among the professionals of service breed training and hunting dog breeds. Garmin is Tri Tronics. It is a professional collar, which has been very popular for many years.

How to Wear an Electronic Collar Correctly?

Wearing the collar correctly is very important. For the collar to fit tightly, you must insert two fingers between collar and dog’s neck.

What is the Purpose to Put Two Sets of Different Probes: Short and Long?

A professional device means working with dogs of all kinds of breeds in all sizes and with different hair, for dogs with smooth hair and very short hair. For proper handling, it is important that the electrodes adhere to the skin of the dog. Electronic training is very complex and requires very deep understanding and knowledge of the psychology of dog behavior, even of the psychology of certain breeds.

    • Hi Nathan,
We are pleased to provide useful info. To my mind Garmin Instinct GPS Watch is the best one if you want to track your dog from the watch. You can combine it with Alpha 100, Astro 430 & 900, or PRO 550 PLUS. If you already have one of these Garmin handhelds, you will need to update the software to connect with the watch.

  • Hi, I am still choosing between Alpha 100 & Astro 900 for my Vizsla. Which one is better?

    • Hi Rick! Actually, the mail difference is that Astro is tracking only. And with Alpha 100 you can track and train your pup. If you still need to train your Vizla, better choose Alpha 100, with its 18 training modes.

  • Hi! I need a E-Collar for basic obedience training of my Beagle puppy. And I am thinking of Garmin Delta XC. But I still don't get the main difference between it and cheaper shock collars like Dog Care for example.

    • Hello Mike, there are actually several basic differences between them.
Dog Care is good for basic training. And you can control even up to 9 dogs with one device. But let's see what makes Garmin special:
      1. Training modes: Dog Care has 3 stimulation modes like static, vibrate and beep + adjustable levels, while Garmin Delta XC has several training modes which assign different combinations of momentary stimulation, continuous stimulation, tone and vibration for different needs and levels of sensitivity. You can also increase or decrease intensity immediately. Moreover, you can program different modes for different dogs and just switch between them if you operate more then one at the same time.
      2. Remote range: Dog Care 0,2 Miles - Garmin Delta XC 0,5 Miles
      3. Battery life may appear to be longer for Dog Care: up to 15 days for collar, and up to 45 days handheld standby time. For Garmin it is 60 and 80 hours per charge respectfully. But in reality they both work appr. the same time. And I don't see a problem to charge twice a week.
      4. Additionally Garmin handheld body is non-slip, which is good for long walks or wet environment.
To sum up, all Garmin bundles are designed not only for basic training, but also to continue with hunting training, for which those extra modes are meant.

    • Hi John! We suggest to combine it with the TT-15 mini collar, which is made for smaller dogs.
If shocking option is not what you need, you can choose Astro 320 with the TT-5 mini collar or vs,
if you just need the shocking option without tracking, Pro 70 will be a good choice.

  • I want to buy a training collar for a dog in order to attempt training because he attacks cats. Which one do you suggest for this type of difficult training. This dog was a rescue, and has other bad behaviors like barking.

    • Hi Nancy,
Attacking cats has hunting nature. Training collar works well for that problem. If you want something from Garmin range,
I recommend Delta Sport XC with bark limiter.
As for barking, it depends where you face this problem. If your dog barks when you can't control him, better choose a special anti-bark collar. It works in a different way. There is a sensor identifying your dog barking, thus activating vibration or shock, depending on the mode you set. I don't know your dog's breed, but anyway, here you can find one of the best bark collars, and also other shock collars besides Garmin: https://petslifeguide.com/best-shock-collars-for-pitbulls/#Best_Bark_Control_Collar_for_Pitbull.
