Jack Russell saved after falling from UK’s tallest waterfall

Despite falling the full height of the waterfall, the dog appeared well apart from a slight limp – and rescuers say he was “very pleased” to be reunited with his owner.

A Jack Russell has been rescued after plunging 60m (196ft) down a waterfall.

Louis plunged down the Grey Mare’s Tail in Dumfries and Galloway at about 2. 45pm on Sunday.

The waterfall is one of the highest in the UK.

Despite the dog falling to the height of the waterfall the dog looked well, apart from the slight limp.

Around 15 members of the volunteer-run Moffat Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) went to the scene after the dog’s owner alerted police.

The team used a rope to lower one team member, with an animal rescue bag from Lyon. They did this after spotting Louis at the bottom of a pool.

The dog was put into the bag, and then brought back to car park by using the rescue equipment and rope system designed for the accessing of the lower pools at Grey Mare’s Tail.

A Moffat MRT spokesman said: “Louis was pulled out of the bottom of the waterfall alive and was very pleased to be reunited with his owner.

“Despite not being locals, they provided details on a vet in the locality they could call to check Louis after his ordeal.

“The owner did the right thing contacting the police and so mountain rescue to ensure the search and rescue was carried out in the safest way possible.

“We wish Louis all the best in his recovery. “
