How To Stop a Beagle From Barking

Why do Beagles Bark So Much?

The perfect dog is perfect in everything: the vocal talent (beagle howling) is also the result of a four hundred year selection. When the prey is being hunted, the short-legged hound constantly has to howl, coordinating the hunter and indicating the location of the game. But the “majestic music of bullying” sounds magic only for hunters 🙂 In everyday life it may course difficulties and problems for the Beagle owners, driving them and neighbors mad.

Reasons of Excessive Barking

Barking is a way of communication through which a pet contacts the owner, shares emotions, signals about problems. Experts of the Beagle breed insist that Beagles in everyday life, in most cases, are clearly silent. The British hound can just subtly growl, reminding of the need to take a walk, or announce loudly about the danger. Most often Beagle bark for some reason.

Barking, howling, whining and singing Beagle will make life difficult for the owner and all the neighbors in the place of residence. Pay attention and not to hope the problem will vanish by itself, as it will not! Negative behavior of the pet can be corrected by many means. To do this, it is necessary to clearly identify the reason and motives for excessive barking. Here are the basic reasons of Beagle barking:

  • Good spirit. A lively barking is an outburst of positive emotions of a cheerful Beagle,
  • Willing to play and engaging others into his game
  • Panic, anxiety, fear of loneliness. Human oriented selection of the breed has led to the consequence that English hounds tolerate loneliness very badly and even may fall into depression in an isolated area
  • Warning of danger, threat. Beagles have poorly developed protective and guard qualities, but the dog reacts accordingly to unfamiliar sounds, beginning to bark
  • Depression, grief, and melancholy. Not busy with hunting, sports training and physical activity, dogs just get bored and complain about it to the whole world
  • Health problems like injury etc

Awareness of the reasons for the annoying and loud noise created by Beagle is the first step on the way to ending the problem.

How do I Get My Beagle to Stop Barking?

As we already know Beagle has a lot of reasons to “yell and shout”. These are also peaks of emotion: joy, fear, anxiety, sadness. And also the desire to attract attention, to get involved in the game, to go for a walk. And a request for help: maybe the dog injured himself. In any case, the first reaction to the negative behavior of a pet should be the desire to understand the reason for the excessive barking, and not the punishment. If the reason for barking is not health problems, we should move on to education and training, how to Stop Beagles from Barking.

Training a Beagle not to Bark

From the early age, along with social adaptation activities, you should start raising a baby Beagle with awareness of the norms and rules of living together. The Rule of Silence at home should be strongly declared. From the age of 2-3 months the pup should clearly understand that barking inside the house for no reason is strictly prohibited. You should not encourage or praise the Beagle that barks at guests at home. Growling as a reaction on noises from the outside and doorbell are also not allowed.

It is much easier to train a puppy than an adult dog. When the dog starts barking, the command “Quiet!” should be followed by an explanatory action, such as fixing the mouth, soothing stroking, distracting with the smell of a treat. Beagle is a highly intellectual and very smart breed, a few exercises will be quite enough to organize perfect silence  at home.

No Bark Collars

What You Need to Know About No Bark Collars

The most popular bark collars have several modes, including shock. The new generation collars have a choice between with-or-without shock modes, or no-shock collars – only beep and vibration, which is more human. The top rated collars use smart technologies, so nearby dogs barking, shaking head or other sounds will not activate the collar. This is very important for proper training. Spray bark collars are previous generation. Such a collar releases a cloud of spray with odor unpleasant for a dog, if you or sensor on the collar identifies excessive barking.

Important Things To Know Before Using a No Bark Collar:

  • The collar should not be too tight – two fingers must fit between the collar belt and your dog’s neck
  • If you are near your pet, reposition the collar on his neck every two hours to avoid skin damage
  • If your dog is a great barker and collar is activated quit often, do not wear it longer than 12 hours to prevent skin irritation
  • Study your pet’s neck daily to ensure the absence of irritation. If there is some, consult a veterinarian before you continue to use a collar

Do Not Use Bark Collar For:

  • Sick dogs
  • Aggressive dogs
  • Dogs under 6 months

Bark Collar for Crate Training

Many Beagle parents suffer from their pet howling in the crate when left alone. They also know that bark collars may help. And they are trying to find a perfect solution: crate prevents from home destruction and collar from barking.

BEWARE!

It is absolutely forbidden to leave a Beagle or any other dog in a crate with a collar on! Any collar, including bark control collar. This for safety reasons, as a dog can hurt himself if being hooked up by the collar to the crate.

With proper crate training your Beagle will be silent in the crate, as it is one one solution to stop barking.

Ultrasonic Dog Barking Deterrent Devices

There is also an alternative to no bark collars – an ultrasonic deterrent. In this case there is no collar on your dog, which corrects the behavior automatically. But a handheld device which you can use by yourself, when the pup starts barking or does other unwanted things like digging etc. The ultrasonic bark control device creates an ultrasonic sound within the dogs hearing range of 20HZ to 30KHZ. The sound does not affect humans and harmless to pets, but can easily grab the dogs attention. All you have to do is to press the button. No recommended for dogs under 6 months and older than 8 years.

Summary

Beagle vitally needs regular long walks and physical activity. The more exercises making him tired, the calmer he is going to be at home. A loud barking is appropriate in the field, when chasing a game. But in urban conditions howling is inappropriate. Proper upbringing is the best way to solve the problem: smart Beagles instantly grab the Rules of Silence and clearly follow the boundaries of behavior assigned to them. For correction purposes no bark collars work perfect.
