Best Leather Dog Collars for Vizsla

Many pet parents, like me, prefer something more solid and durable than polyester. I am talking about leather dog collars. Your dog feels very soft and natural texture around his neck during all day.

Such a collar never feels cold even if wet. It looks expensive and beautiful. The only drawback I found – leather collars dry rather slow. So it is better to wear a waterproof one for swimming sessions.

Best Training Collars and E-Collars for Vizsla

Basic training is essential for every dog, and hunting dogs are not exception. Training collars are very helpful during early age of the pup. They can help with solving the problem of collection food from the ground when the dog is at the distance, not to run away, and many others.  You can train both obedience and ban commands, using different modes.

If you do it for the first time, refer to a specialist for instructions. Never use an E-Collar for puppies under 6 months.

Buyer’s Guide

What to Look for When Buying a Dog Collar or Harness for Vizsla

Collar or Harness – Which is Best Suited and When?

Whether a collar or a harness is better for dogs is a controversial question. Both the collar and the harness have their pros and cons. Here we will show you in which situations the use of a dog collar is best and in which situations you should rather use a dog harness.

Collars for Vizsla are available in a wide variety of materials and in many different shapes, colors and designs. You can choose among them based on your tastes, purpose of use and budget. Take into consideration the following pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Easy to put on
  • Your dog is not restricted in his movement
  • Looks smart
  • Enables a specific control over the dog
  • Cheaper than an equivalent dog harness
  • Finding the best fitted model for your dog is easier than with harnesses

Cons:

  • Only a small contact area affects tension on the leash
  • Causes pressure on such sensitive organ throat by pulling the leash
  • Can cause damage to spine, spinal cord and nerves
  • Suitable only for leashed dogs, without flight instinct
  • Some dogs can get out of it relatively easily
  • A badly fitted collar can easily arose aggression caused by pain
  • Not suitable for securing a dog in a car

Dog Harnesses for Vizsla are also available in a wide variety of materials, shapes, colors and designs. There are cases when harnesses are much better than a collar. Let’s see their pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Distributes the pressure from leash pulling over a larger contact surface
  • Distribute the pressure to less sensitive parts of the body (chest of the dog) and thus relieves the neck
  • Suitable for dogs that jump on the leash more often or get scared
  • Suitable for dogs that are not yet leashed
  • Special safety harnesses from which dogs can free themselves only with great difficulty
  • Special car safety harnesses
  • Optimally suitable for pulling work

Cons:

  • Harder to put on than collars
  • Dog is restricted in his movements, also when running free
  • A harness must fit really well not to hurt the dog
  • Less precise control than collars
  • More expensive than collars
  • Finding the right model for your dog is harder than with collars

It is not possible to say in general terms that harnesses or collars are better – it always depends on the dog, the intended use.

What is Suitable, When and for Which Dog?

If your dog has learned to walk on a loose leash and is easy to control, it makes sense to use a collar, because this will restrict your dog the least. Collars are suitable for normal walking as well as for dog training.  However, if your dog is restless, still very young, very spirited, easily scared, or has not yet learned to walk calmly on a leash, it is more suitable to use a dog harness for normal walking.

If the dog (or the owner) pulls the leash permanently or jerkily, strong forces act on the dog’s body. These forces are naturally distributed over a larger area when using a well-fitting better with a harness than with a collar. Constant pulling on the collar is painful for your dog in any case and can be harmful to your dog’s health by damaging sensitive organs in the neck area and of course the spine.

For specific training (e.g. for leash handling) at the dog training area a collar is better suited than a harness. It enables a more precise control of the dog, because the dog leash is attached to the collar further forward than with a harness. With a collar you can steer your dog much better than with a harness. Even large, heavy dogs, or dogs where the neck and chest muscles are particularly strong, can be brought under control more easily with a collar than with a harness thanks to the shortened leverage on the collar.

A special car harness must always be used is your dog is travelling on the front or back seat and you secure him with special seat belts. In an accident he will be injure his neck if secured by collar.

Harnesses can also have a negative effect on your dog’s health, as they may often restrict movement of the dog’s front legs and shoulder blade. In addition, many harnesses are too tight in the dog’s armpit area. This also often causes an unnatural position of the elbow. All in all, poorly adapted harnesses often sit too loosely, which can also lead to an unnatural posture of your dog. When buying a harness, you must pay close attention to design and size, because a harness, unlike a collar, can effect your dog’s free movement
