DeShedding Brushes – Undercoat Rake

English Springers shed fur all year and it’s heavier when spring and fall season comes, they need regular trimming to remove extra fur from the inner coat especially. For this process, you’ll need a DeShedding tool. Undercoat rake is the best solution for Spaniels. It trims out the undercoat, reduces dead loose hairs and also serves as a perfect dematting grooming tool.

Daily Brushing – Bristle Brush

For straight hair, just brush it often as it grows. Choose a wire-bristle brush that can help you reach and brush from the outer coat to the inner coat, it’s just natural that skin flakes come off altogether. Or you can also use a natural hair brush that has soft bristles for a shiny finish.

Lastly, a detangling tool is also important in your professional devices. The growing fur on the head, chest, ears, and legs, will cause tangles and knots. Usually, wet weather or running in high grass and bushes can cause dematting. And Slicker brush will make it easier for you. It works very good for longer hair of Spaniels. It helps to detangle the hair, makes it soft and straight. Use it every day to keep your Spaniel’s hair neat.

Buyer’s Guide – Best Brush for Springer Spaniel

Things To Consider When Buying the Best Brushes For English Springer Spaniel

  • Train your English Springer to brush his coat as early as possible so that he will get used to the routine. Do it a few minutes each day or before you go on a walk. You can give him a reward after that or treat him for a quick fun game, he’ll definitely love that. It gives your pet the early training of discipline aside from looking presentable all the time.
  • Regarding the types of brushes that we mentioned above, it’s much better to use these professional tools in order to make it easier for you and your dog. In some cases, pet owners pick the wrong choice of tools and they aren’t even aware that the coat remains untidy (on the inside).  It’s also important to choose high-quality brands that are sturdy and will last a long time of use.
  • Another thing to keep in mind is the shedding process of the English Springer. This breed sheds non-stop and they tend to shed more during the spring and fall season. However, unlike other breeds, they shed on their own, and brushing them regularly is just a way to make shedding faster and welcome a new set of fur.

These are the tools that professional groomers use and it’s better to have them in your home. You can now give the proper care to your dog without spending a lot of money at the pet salon.

This video gives you a good idea for every day care, and also about regular grooming, which includes clipping and cutting.

When Should I Start Grooming My Springer Spaniel?

The first grooming for an English Springer takes place approximately at the age of 6 months. However, you can train him as early as possible by daily combing or pretending to trim using scissors, in that way, he will be used to the noise of the grooming tools. We recommend referring to a professional groomer first.

Should I Shave my Springer Spaniel?

Yes. Shaving an English Springer Spaniel is normal. It doesn’t ruin anything. Shaving is the same as Clipping. Spaniels are hand-stripped just a little and then shaved. Hand-stripping just helps a little to shed better so, you should shave your dog regularly.

Summary

An English Springer’s coat is their protection and at the same time, their biggest asset. As a pet parent, it is your responsibility to keep your dog well-groomed and maintain a healthy coat. Just follow the shedding process and whenever you feel like your dog needs your help to take off some fur.

  • Comb the coat daily (outer and inner coat) to remove mats and knots – give treats!
  • Help with handstripping regularly especially on the heavy shedding season
  • Use deshedding tools at least once a week
  • Trimming every few months

Remember: A healthy dog means a happy dog. A happy dog, means a happy owner as well.
