Nutrition of the English Springer Spaniel

The Springer Spaniel is not very picky when it comes to food, industrial food (dry food) is suitable for him in any case. However, the food must be adapted to his age, weight and daily physical activity. One meal a day is sufficient, preferably in the evening, as this promotes digestion. In no case should the Springer Spaniel have food at his free disposal, because with this active dog the stomach can easily roll over and this can end deadly.

Health is just as important as good care, and a well balanced diet is just as vital. In principle, the Springer Spaniel does not have any special dietary requirements, however, a food that provides the right amount of nutrients and vitamins is essential for him. Some spaniels tend to be overweight and should therefore never be fed more than the recommended daily amount. Treats in between must be included and after a meal the feeding bowl should be cleaned and put away. Fresh drinking water should always be available.

Wet, Dry, Raw or Cooked? Which Food is the Right One?

There are different opinions about which food is best for the dog. While some swear by the BARF method (biologically appropriate raw feeding), others are of the opinion that the meat and vegetables must be boiled. Still others prefer to reach directly for the ready-made wet or dry food from the shelf – and there are also very controversial views among dog owners as to which product is really good for the dog. In all these discussions, however, the most important thing is often overlooked. Because no matter which feeding method you choose, the important thing is that your dog is provided with all the essential nutrients through his food.

What Nutrients Does My Spaniel Need?

For a long and healthy life, your Spaniel – like all other dogs – needs proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins and of course water. These nutrients must be present in the right amount and mixture in the daily food. How much of each nutrient your dog needs and how they should be balanced depends on very individual factors. Depending on age, size, weight, exercise level and state of health, this can vary greatly from dog to dog – or from spaniel to spaniel. Therefore, a nutritional analysis on the Internet or a discussion with your breeder or veterinarian is always advisable.

So the question about the right food cannot be answered in a fixed way. In order to give you a first guideline value nevertheless: A healthy, fully grown Springer Spaniel eats about 200 to 250 g of beef per day. The meat should be supplemented with oatmeal, cottage cheese, rice, vegetables or fruit. For a rich supply of dietary fiber, raw green stomach rumen should be fed from time to time. Non-boned fish and raw eggs are important sources of protein and should be included at least once in the weekly diet of your Springer Spaniel.
